As a car owner in Illinois, you may be considering tinting the windows on your vehicle. Whether you want some enhanced privacy, reduced glare, or simply want to add some life to your car’s aesthetics, it’s crucial to understand the legal requirements for window tinting in the state you drive in. At M.O. Graphics, we’re committed to keeping you informed and compliant with Illinois law while providing top-notch window tinting services.

Throughout this article you’ll see the term VLT used frequently, but what does it mean? VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission and measures the percentage of light that can pass through your tinted windows. In Illinois, the legal requirement is that your tint must allow at least 35 percent of light to pass through.

This applies to most windows on your vehicle, ensuring a balance between privacy and safety. Here is a breakdown of specific Illinois window tinting laws by window, per the state:

Windshield: You’re allowed to have a non-reflective tint strip at the top of your windshield, but it cannot extend more than six inches from the top.

Front Side Windows: Your front side windows must allow more than 35% of light to pass through.

Back Side Windows: Your back side windows are the same as the front, as they must allow more than 35% visible light transmission rule as well.

Rear Window: For sedans, the 35% VLT rule is in effect. However, for SUV owners, or vans & trucks, there are no restrictions on rear window tinting.

Multipurpose Vehicles: These have a slightly different requirement, with tint needing to be 50% or less.

These are the standard tinting rules by window. There are some additional considerations and expectations that can be made, as well:

Side Mirrors: If your rear window is tinted, you must have dual side mirrors installed.

Tint Color: Illinois does allow all tint colors for those who wish to do a big of customization.

Reflectivity: While front side windows must be non-reflective, the law doesn’t specify exact limits for other windows.

Medical Exemptions:  If you have a medical condition that requires special tinting, you can obtain an exemption. You'll need a certified statement from a licensed physician, which you must carry in your vehicle and submit to the Secretary of State's Office.
